Abstract: Exploring fficient and low cost oxygen ectrocatalysts for ORR and OER is citical for developingrenewable energy technologies like fuel cells, metal-air batteries, and water clectrolyzers. This presenntation will presentsa systematic study on oxygen clectrocatalysis (ORR and OER) of tasition metal spinel oxides. Starting with a moxdelsystem of Mn.Co spinel, the presenation will introduce the orrelation of oxygen catalytic acivities of these oxides andtheir intrinsic chemical propertics. The catalytic activity was measured by rotating disk technique and the intrinsicchemical properties were probed by synchrotron X-ray abserption tchniques. It was found that moleeular orbital theoryis able t0 wllexplain their ativities. The atetion was further extended from cubic Mn-Co spinels to tetragonal Mn-Cospincls and it was found that the molccular theory is again dominant in determining the catalytic activies. Thismechanistic principle is further applied to explain the ORR/OER activites of other spinels containing other transitionmetals (Fe. Ni, Zn. Li, and elc.).
